Mellor, the UK’s leading size-appropriate bus manufacturer, is to present its new all-electric, zero-emissions Sigma 8 bus for the first time at EuroBus Expo at the NEC.

The eight-metre battery-electric bus is the latest in a six-model Sigma range (from seven- to 12-metres) to hit the UK market, joining seven and 10-metre models launched at the start of 2022. With ‘city’ and ‘rural’ specifications, including width and passenger door options, Sigma presents the most configurable bus range in Europe, offering customers a zero-emissions, zero-compromise solution to public transport.

Mellor has revealed that it has already received major orders for Sigma, with details expected to be announced at EuroBus Expo.
Sigma 8 boasts a 54-passenger capacity for 27 seated and 27 standees. The battery-electric bus delivers substantial size and cost benefits over competitor vehicles, filling a gap between smaller capacity vehicles and larger, expensive, under-utilised buses. Mellor believes its zero-emissions, zero-compromise rationale is causing significant market disruption – especially at the smaller seven- and eight-metre end of the market – prompting its competitors to announce future model introductions of a similar size and specification.

“We’re definitely shaking things up in the bus market,” said Mellor Bus Division Sales Director, Mark Clissett, “we’ve filled a gap where operators have previously been acquiring over-sized, over-spec’d vehicles which continue to be under-utilised. Mellor, on the other hand, offers the right tool for the job,” he said, “a fully-electric, affordable, size-appropriate bus range which delivers a no-compromise solution. And our competitors are playing catch-up. Only recently,” he added, “a well-known player in the market has said it will introduce an electric midibus in 2023 – while the Mellor Sigma range is available today.”
Mellor is showing Sigma 8 and Sigma 7 models on its stand at EuroBus Expo, while a Sigma 10 is available for a ride experience at the Show’s Zero Emissions Zone vehicle demonstration area.
